any kite surfers are aware of this by now: Cumbuco is the place to be!
You can hit the water in the months from May until January. Ninety percent of the time the wind will come from the right at 3 to 5 Bft., so you can surf daily with a 10 – 12 or 14 m2 kite. The high sand dunes help create a constant, warm wind, which blows side-shore in the mornings and side-on shore in the afternoons. You won’t need a wetsuit, the water temperature varies between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius all year round. You do need to bring a lycra shirt and a good sunblock cream, however, because Cumbuco lies 3 degrees from the equator and the sun is almost perpendicular to the earth.
Lagoa do Cauipe
At about six kilometres outside Cumbuco you’ll find the freshwater lake ‘Lagoa do Cauipe’. You can get to this lake by buggy along the beach o you can make a ‘down winder’ of about 45 minutes from Cumbuco to the lake. From our pousada we can then organise for you to be picked up again from Cauipe. There are no waves on the lake, which makes it very suited to beginners.
Paracuru
Another beautiful spot for kite surfing Paracuru is at an hour’s drive north of Cumbuco an leads itself for a daytrip. You can drive a buggy along the beach to this kite surfers paradise, where the water is flat for the first 150 metres up to the reef, after which there are waves from one up to 3 metres. Low tide is the best time to surf here.
Kite schools
By now a number of kite schools have been established in Cumbuco, where you can take lessons and rent equipment. At the kiteschools are kitelockers available to store safely your kite equipment. Renting a complete equipment will cost approximately 200 reais per day. If you bring your own equipment you should take into account that Martinair charges € 80,00 excess weight each way. If you fly with Tap Air you are free to take your equipment without having to pay extra for it.
